Our group started because there was a need for a "go between" between
the Office of Housing and various community agencies. We are all
volunteers and, as we are getting older, would love some younger
people to get involved. We belong to the Reservoir Community
Improvement Project and work to improve the conditions on estates. We have 3 playgroups run by
volunteers from our building. We liaise with a number of local
agencies and meet regularly with the local Housing Manager to discuss tenants'
issues. We hold meetings on the first Wednesday of the month at 7
Newton St. Reservoir at 10.30am and everyone is welcome. We are open
every weekday from 9.30-2pm for anyone to drop in, get information or
just have a chat. We can be contacted on 0408 524 133 at anytime.

furniture swapping and distribution. We have close links with St.
Luke's Anglican Church and Skinner's Adventure Playground which both
provide important services to the tenants and wider community. The
Brotherhood of St. Laurence tenant worker shares the office with us.
Glendonald Residents Group
PO Box 245
Churchill 3842
This group is based in Churchill in the Latrobe Valley. Glendonald has
a high concentration of public housing, about 60%, mixed with private rental
and owner/occupiers. It is a Neighbourhood Renewal area so the group is
open to all residents, regardless of their housing type. The idea behind
this is that all residents have issues in common and are part of the same
community no matter what kind of housing they live in.
The group has a community development focus and has been successful in
attracting grants for training and other purposes. One of their projects
involves organising physical activities after school for children of all
ages in the local park. Group members provide afternoon tea and supervise
the activities conducted with support from the local primary school and
students from Monash University.
Group members have found that being part of a group has empowered them.
They have greater opportunities to address issues and, as a group, they have
access to people who can make changes and decisions which is often more
difficult for people working alone.
The group meets monthly and distributes a monthly newsletter. It organises
local events to coincide with national days such as Clean Up Australia Day,
World Environment Day and Tree Planting Day. Celebrations and fun activities
are usually planned for Australia Day, Easter, Christmas and school holidays.

Tenants are welcome to drop in for information, a chat and a cuppa from 10am-2pm Monday to Thursday when 2 tenant volunteers are in the office. We run a number of community development programs including monthly coach trips, a craft class and a small shop.
A monthly meeting is held with the Housing Manager to discuss tenant issues. We have also established a committee consisting of representatives from the Department of Justice, police, local council, Office of Housing, indigenous community and tenants which works to improve conditions on the estates. The Williamstown Tenants Association was formed back in 1979 with our first Chairperson being George Dixon, Secretary Margaret Shaw and Treasurer Elizabeth Dixon. We started mainly as a youth club and grew from there to become the WTA and we now have about 2600 tenants in our region. We hold monthly Committee of Management meetings and separate monthly Security/General meetings where we discuss issues the tenants want to raise. Our main office is open Monday, Tuesday and Friday 9am till 2.30pm and computer classes are held during this time too. We also have trips to the casino every 3 months and weekend trips 2 or 3 times a year thanks to Irene Dixon. Our Chairperson is Lois McLean, Secretary George Dixon and Treasurer/Public Office Irene Dixon.
