The VPTA, which was established in 2001, is run by public tenants through its Committee of Management which is made up of representatives from tenant groups. It has 2 full time workers - a Coordinator and an Administrative Officer.
The organisation is funded by the Office of Housing through the Public Housing Advocacy Program.
Its role is to:
- support and resource established tenant groups and informal groups of tenants,
- work with tenants to set up new groups,
- provide information about public housing issues,
- promote the rights of all Victorian public tenants,
- work towards enabling public tenants to gain greater control over their living situation.
- Organising training for tenant groups,
- Producing a newsletter,
- Running information forums about current issues,
- Providing a central point for the collection and dissemination of housing information,
- Representing its members. views to government, media and the community,
- Having input into Office of Housing policy and procedures.
There are currently 23 funded tenant groups in Victoria. Seventeen of these are in the city and 6 in the country. Groups are provided with a small amount of funding by the Office of Housing to represent their local tenants and work cooperatively with service providers and their local area office. Groups are expected to attend training organised by the VPTA, provide 2 newsletters per year and run 4 general meetings for the tenant community.
